Fun with Tim Holtz Distress Crayons and CardMaker Blog Hop!

Crayons that you can color, smudge, watercolor, blend… say what?! That’s what the CardMaker Blog Team were sent to play with, Tim Holtz® Distress Crayons.

I love my Distress Inks, and now crayons that blend in the same way! I received the set that has Antique Linen, Vintage Photo, Walnut Stain, Hickory Smoke, Black Soot, Picket Fence.

I needed a birthday card for an “older” guy friend and decided to put these crayons to the test!

I started by dry embossing part of my background with Tim’s Sizzix Bricked embossing folder. I scribbled the different colors over the bricks then smudged with my finger, adding some darker shades here and there for a real weathered brick look.

For the ‘sidewalk’ I lightly colored Black Soot and used my waterbrush to move the color around.

The background turned out great, but could I actually color an image with the crayons? The answer is YES!

I stamped the old guys using my MISTI, then took the crayons and scribbled them in a watercolor palette. From there I used my waterbrush to pick up color and paint my image. I did use a little marker on the cheeks for a little rosy look. When I was satisfied with how they looked, I overstamped the image with a strong black ink to make it pop, and, using scissors did some fussy cutting.

After I popped up the image, I took my waterbrush and added some shadow with the Black Soot crayon.

The quick sign is just the sentiment stamped and the Black Soot crayon taken around the edge and the waterbrush pulling the color inward. I colored a toothpick for the ‘stick’. I dry embossed a piece of cardstock cut to resemble a bucket, scribbled the Black Soot crayon over and waterbrushed. I took a sanding block lightly over the bucket to give it a ‘worn’ look.

I think the old guys look pretty good monochromatic! Now I need to get the other crayon colors available.

Now for my cards. Yes, I did two. It's cold and snowy (emphasis on COLD!) so what better to do than stamp!

This first card is October Afternoon & Pink Paislee cardstock from Jacksonbelle Embellishments. The images are from Our Daily Bread designs, Confirmation. I stamped the verse first, then I stamped the dove from the set on a sticky note and cut it out. I placed the "sticky note" dove in place, then used a reverse mask for the oval (a piece of paper with the oval cut out), then I airbrushed over the dove. (for some reason I could not get a true color picture no matter what lighting I used! grrrr! the paper isn't so "blue", it's more teal).

The image is from Art Impressions and is colored with Copics. The layer inside the scalloped frame is also colored with a Copic to match the DP and the image. (RV17 Deep Magenta and G12 Sea Green/YG41 Pale Cobalt Green match it perfectly!)

Grandma Goes Overboard!

Don’t get worried…it’s not a headline!

This is my CCEE challenge card for today… (host Cindy Motherway's challenges based on the popular 60's song The Birds & The Bees.)

Let me tell ya about the Birds and the Bees
And the Flowers and the Trees
And the Moon Up Above
And a Name I Just Love!

Notice the last line she changed…this is our CNFS (catchy name featured stamper), Grandma Overboard on SCS.

I also combined it with SCS’s Technique challenge today, Painted Grid. I’d never done this before, it was fun! After coloring my image and masking, I took Magic Mesh and wrapped it around my brayer then rolled it in acrylic paint and rolled over my image. (first I did her top, then I masked the entire image… airbrushed the background and brayered)

 

The image is from Art Impressions…I just love these old gals! Paper from DCWV and I faux’d the layers with a Copic marker.

I'm NOT Deaf...

Not really...just busy!

Jean just cracks me up! She's from Art Impressions and was done for the Limited Supply Challenge on SCS...to pick a special day/observance in May... Better Hearing and Speech Month!

She's colored with Copics, stickles on her pinwheel, shaving cream background leftover from the other day.... true serendipity! When I color an image I don't usually have paper in mind, I just color! When I got ready to put the card together, lo and behold, there was that piece! Perfect!!

And a card I did yesterday...I just love realistic bird stamps! This one from Our Daily Bread. Not only are they beautiful images but Kelley puts wonderful Scriptures and quotes with them.

It's colored with Prismacolor pencils blended with baby oil. The cool border I got from Mel's blog. It's just a template she drew that you can print off... trace on the backside and cut away! I tell ya, she has more tricks up her sleeve than David Copperfield! (ooh, did you know I got to go see his show one time....awesome!)

Singing Around The Piano

This is Betty from Art Impressions. Today's Ways To Use It on SCS is to use alcohol in some form...be it alcohol inks, markers, rubbing alcohol etc. From the look of Betty pounding out the song, I think maybe she's been nipping at the other alcohol! LOL

I colored with Copic markers, which are an alcohol marker, and I did Polished Stone using Ranger Alcohol inks and blending solution (that's the pretty, splotchy, glossy paper).

Once I was ready to put the card together, it still needed something....so I carefully airbrushed the top and bottom edges! Ahhh! That was it!

Fully Recovered

Art Impressions....you gotta love them! This one is called "Recovered" and it was done for the Sketch Challenge on SCS. Once again I couldn't get the colors in the pic to show as deep as they really are...so use your imagination! The chair is much darker!

I colored the image with Prismacolor pencils and blended them with baby oil. Again to save on cardstock, the black "layers" are fauxed by using a ruler and Sharpie marker. The blue layer is actually a white piece of cs, I just used a Copic marker around the edges to get the color I wanted!

I used my Scor-Pal to get the correct size of the sketch layer then cut around it with scissors. The blue layer and main panel are popped up on thin foam dimensionals.

The "Recovered" image comes as one entire framed rectangle with the sentiment framed within it. I cut it all apart so I could use it separately if I wanted. *wink*

I'm Sure You Can Relate!!

I tell my hubby all the time "why do I bother talking? you don't listen to me!"

I actually had another guy in mind when I did the card though...you'd have to know him.....I already mailed it to him and I'm sure he got a chuckle out of it.

I'm sure I'll hear about it next time I see him!!

The card was done for the Sketch Challenge on SCS....(lol...I think I used the same sentiment but a different image for the last one!). I love Art Impressions and they're so much fun to color!

I just came in from feeding the llamas....let me tell you, you haven't lived till you've had to do chores when the temp is single and minus digits! I know in other parts of the country it's a lot colder.... but... brrrrrrr it's pretty cold out there!
